Derrick Ypenburg

Derrick Ypenburg is recognized as an industry expert in internet technologies and creation of rich multimedia applications. As co-owner of Focus on Media and Rich Media Lead, Derrick brings over 10 years of experience to the job, to make the most simple websites or presentations to the most complex rich media applications. Derrick is an expert user of Adobe products, the tools used for the design and implementation of web, print and live projects. Derrick has recently authored the  ActionScript 3.0: Visual QuickStart Guide for PeachPit Press based in California.

Prior to joining Focus on Media full-time, Derrick worked with the industry leader New Toronto Group as a Senior Consultant and Trainer. There, as a Certified Flash Expert (CFE), and Adobe Certified instructor, Derrick travelled North America to train a variety of clients. During his time with New Toronto Group, Derrick also worked on multimedia and streaming projects for companies such as MTV, Spike TV, New England Journal of Medicine and Truefire. Under NTG, Derrick co-authored the official Adobe Authorized Flash Video Applications course, to be used worldwide.

Prior to working with NTG, Derrick was an instructor at both Humber College and Sheridan College where he taught in the Internet Management Program and Journalism Programs, and Interactive Multimedia programs respectively. Derrick’s outstanding communications skills, speaking presence and expertise in video streaming technologies has also garnered him opportunities to speak internationally. Derrick has sat as a member of the Advisory Committee for the School of Internet Management, Humber College and was a leading contributor and writer for “Community MX”, one of the world’s top resource portals for internet business and Adobe product development. In 2004 and 2005, Derrick received the honour of being a Juror for the Canadian Gemini Awards “Best Interactive” category.

Derrick started his career with EMI/Virgin Music, Canada’s top music label, as a Multimedia developer. There, he authored over 100 marketing and promotional websites for such top acts as The Beatles, Beastie Boys and Lenny Kravitz. Derrick also delivered on-demand audio and video feeds, live web-casting and promotional downloads. In 1998, he pioneered live, on-demand streaming and promotional downloads, a first for the Canadian music industry.
